Hot
water drilling system shown set up for field use. The black object on
the front of the sled is the battery used to start the pump-generator
gas motor.
At the top right corner of the boiler box is a
distribution manifold to which the hot water hose leading to the thermo
drill rod is attached. A bleed line also attaches to the manifold. This
line runs to the hole in, for example, sea ice from which sea water is
drawn by the pump system. The hot bleed water discharged into this hole
prevents hole freeze up. The manifold also contained a temperature and
pressure gauge.
The thermo drill is the silver colored rod on the front side of the sled.
A
self contained ice drilling system where the hot water high pressure
pump and electric generator unit are in the dark blue box and the hot
water boiler unit is in the light blue box as packed for shipment.
These items weigh 90 and 112 kg (200 and 250 lbs respectively). Hose reel not shown.
