Founder & President Austin Kovacs
is nationally and internationally recognized for his research at the
U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory
(CRREL). Before joining CRREL, he worked as an arctic engineer on
the Alaska and Canadian Distant Early Warning Line for ITT Federal
Electric Co. His research at CRREL included studies of footing and
pile foundations on snow and ice, anchorages in snow and frozen ground,
concepts of resonant pile driving and coring, compressed gas blasting,
concepts for the testing of frozen materials, mechanical properties of
ice, sea ice dynamics and morphology, geophysical and electromagnetic
studies of snow and ice. These pursuits resulted in extensive
field research in Greenland, Canada, Alaska and Antarctica.
He
has authored or co-authored over 220 technical reports, 50 journal and
54 conference papers. These include research reports for
government agencies and private industry.
He has provided consulting services to over seventeen national and international firms.
In
addition, he developed special auguring, drilling and testing devices
and has two U.S. Government patents. He received a number of
awards in recognition of his work and was honored with an Antarctic
glacier bearing his name.
