A
hot water drilling system used to verify the location of World War II
P-38 fighter aircraft buried 80 m below the firn surface on the
Greenland Ice Cap.
This unit was tailored to fit into a Cessna
180 aircraft for field transport. The boiler and pump unit are in the
red box. Electric power was provided by the generator. Water for the
system was drawn from plastic lined pool located under the blue tarp.
The
pool was supplied by melted snow placed on the black tarp seen
stretching up slope from the pool Hose leading from the base of the box
supplied hot water to the drill rod. Another hose extended to the pool
and provided hot water to melt snow shoveled into the pool. This hose
is not visible as it had melted into the snow surface.
The
hose seen extending to the pool from the top of the box is the cold
water supply line. This boiler could heat water to 155°C (310°F)!
